Diablo 4 - Nightmare Dungeons and Sigils

July 10, 2023

In Diablo 4 you can craft Nightmare Sigils to turn any Dungeon into a Nightmare Dungeon, which gives improved EXP, drops and a more difficult challenge.

Nightmare Dungeons become available as soon as you unlock World Tier III Nightmare Mode after completing the main story campaign.

Nightmare Dungeons are one of the best ways to earn EXP in Diablo 4 and there are currently over 100 Tiers for players to challenge.

How Nightmare Dungeons Work

You can transform any Dungeon in Diablo 4 into a Nightmare Dungeon by using a corresponding Nightmare Sigil item. These items can be found in your Consumables tab.

A Nightmare Dungeon offers more EXP than a regular dungeon and better drop rates of more powerful items. However, the monsters inside Nightmare Dungeons are notably tougher and you also have to deal with several Afflications.

Afflictions are side-effects that you'll have to deal with during your Nightmare Dungeon. You get 1 positive affliction and the rest will be negative.  These effects are randomly assigned to each Nightmare Sigil that is found or crafted.

You also only get a limited number of revives in Nightmare Dungeons. If you use all of your revives up, you'll be booted out of the dungeon.

Nightmare Dungeon complete

Completing a Nightmare Dungeon guarantees you at least one Legendary+ item.

Nightmare Sigils become available in World Tier III. Each Nightmare Sigil has a tier level, all the way up to Tier 100. Only the highest and strongest Diablo 4 players will be attempting the higher tiers in Diablo 4.

You'll want to start out a Tier 1 and work your way up to higher tiers.

You can only attempt Nightmare Dungeon Tiers 1-20 in World Tier III (Nightmare mode).

To attempt Tiers 21-100 you'll need to unlock World Tier IV Torment mode.

How To Unlock Nightmare Sigil Crafting

Craft Nightmare Sigils

You can craft specific Nightmare Dungeon Sigils by speaking to the Occultist.

In order to be able to craft Nightmare Sigils you must first complete a Tier 5 Nightmare Dungeon, otherwise the crafting tab at the Occultist will be unavailable. Crafting Nightmare Sigils requires you to have Sigil Powder Resource.

Before you can craft your own individual Nightmare Sigils, you'll need to rely on obtaining them from other methods. You can find Nightmare Sigils from:

When you find one Nightmare Dungeon sigil, you usually will be able to find more inside of a Nightmare Dungeon itself.

A Nightmare Dungeon will drop sigils around it's level; so if you take on a Level 3 Nightmare Dungeon, you'll have the chance for Level 1-5 sigils to drop also.

How To Get Sigil Powder in Diablo 4

Nightmare Sigil

Sigil Powder is the resource needed to craft Nightmare Sigils in Diablo 4. Once you have completed a Tier 5 Nightmare Dungeon, you can then craft your own Nightmare Sigils at the Occultist.

Sigil Powder can be gotten from two places:

  • Completing any Nightmare Dungeon
  • Salvaging unwanted Nightmare Sigil items from your Inventory at the Occultist.

When you complete a Nightmare Dungeon, you'll get a small amount of Sigil Powder as a reward.

You can also salvage any unwanted Nightmare Sigils at the Occultist, which will turn them into a small amount of Sigil Powder.
