There are countless ways to gather loot while playing Fortnite from chests to vending machines and NPCs. And - so long as you have a Fishing Rod or a Harpoon Gun - you can also fish for loot and various Fortnite Fish that offer heals and shield.
How to Fish
Fishing Holes in Fortnite look like little ripples in the water with fish visible underneath
Fishing was introduced to the game in Chapter 2 Season 1 and it's pretty easy to do.
When you come across a body of water, look to see if there are any fish swimming around. Then, with either a Harpoon Gun or Fishing Rod, use the action button (right trigger on Xbox, for example) to set the angle of your cast.
Once you're in the center of the fishing spot, let go of the action button to cast your line. Then you wait for a bite and, once you feel one, use the action button again to reel it in.
Different Types of Fishing Rods
These Fishing Rod barrels are scattered throughout the map, often by water. When you search the barrels, you can find regular Fishing Rods, Pro Fishing Rods and Harpoon Guns.
There are three items that can be used to fish: the Fishing Rod, the Pro Fishing Rod and the Harpoon Gun.
While they're all fairly similar, there are some key differences to note when you're choosing your preferred item to catch Fortnite Fish. You can also catch ammo, weapons and materials while fishing.
Fishing Rod
The Fishing Rod is a common item that can be found in chests, barrels, floor loot, Loot Llamas and Supply Drops. You can use the Fishing Rod to fish anywhere you see a fishing spot.
Pro Fishing Rod
The Pro Fishing Rod is a rare item and an upgrade to the regular Fishing Rod.
You can get a Pro Fishing Rod by getting lucky and finding them like the regular Fishing Rod, or you can get one by upgrading a regular Fishing Rod for 300 gold at an Upgrade Bench.
There are some Fortnite Fish that can only be caught with a Pro Fishing Rod, like the Pink Shield Fish. Also, using the Pro Fishing Rod increases your chances of catching better weapons while fishing.
Harpoon Gun
The Harpoon Gun is a multi-use item. It can be used for fishing and can quickly pull your catch toward you. It can also be used for damaging buildings, pulling items towards you and attacking enemies and bringing them closer.
The Harpoon Gun has all the same fishing capabilities as the two Fishing Rods, however, there are some fish that cannot be caught by using a Harpoon Gun, like the Light Blue Small Fry.
Where to Find Fish
You can also fish while swimming in the water.Â
Anywhere that there is a body of water you'll likely find a fishing spot. Some Fortnite Fish are only available in certain areas, though.
The four key regions to find specific Fortnite Fish are: coastal, forest, swamp and mountainous regions.
By checking out the map before you drop, you can choose which region you want to land in depending on what specific Fortnite Fish you're looking to catch.
These Ice Boxes are scattered across the map and Fortnite Fish like Floppers and Blue Slurpfish can be found in them.
You can also find fish in various Ice Boxes across the map.
Fish vs Other Healing Items
Eating some Fortnite Fish will give you health and/or shield. You can also stack Fortnite Fish in your inventory like you would Shield Pots, Med Kits, Bandages, Chug Splash and Guzzle Juice.
Some healing items are better than others. For example, while using a Med Kit will completely replenish your health bar, it takes over 10 seconds to complete and you have to stay still while using it. Compared to using something like Chug Splash and Med Mist which can be used while moving and also take far less time.
You have to stay still to eat Fortnite Fish for health or shield but it only takes a second, just like other food items in the game.
Because of how quick Fortnite Fish can replenish your health and shield, they're definitely a valuable item to have in your inventory. They may not be as convenient as Chug Splash or Med Mist because you can't move while eating fish, but they're quick to use and certainly outrank other healing items like Med Kits.
