MapleStory Papulatus Boss Guide

August 26, 2024

Papulatus is one of the oldest bosses in MapleStory and with it's new revamped mechanics, the boss fight can be quite tricky to overcome! We've got you covered- this guide will show you how you can defeat Papulatus, what moves will one-hit you and the best strategy for taking it down.

If you haven't unlocked Papulatus yet, check out the Papulatus Prequest Guide. Once unlocked, you can face the boss on all your MapleStory characters without having to do the prequest again.

Papulatus Boss Modes

Papulatus has three modes and drops the following Boss Crystal:

  • Easy - 684,500 Mesos (Daily) (Level 125+)
  • Normal - 2,664,500 Mesos (Daily) (Level 155+)
  • Chaos - 26,450,000 Mesos (Weekly) (Level 190+)

Papulatus was revamped in patch V191 Nova Brilliance. Before that, Papulatus was one of the first bossess ever introduced to MapleStory, along with the Ludibrium area. In MapleStory Classic, this boss was regarded as one of the toughest in the game.

Papulatus Boss Mechanics Guide

Crack

To fight Papulatus, you must drop the Piece Of Cracked Dimension on the missing block piece on the upper platform. You'll be given a Piece Of Cracked Dimension automatically when you try to enter the Clocktower.

If you place it correctly, Papulatus's Orb will be summoned. Upon attacking it, the fight will begin.

Claws

Claws

The first thing you should notice is that there are Claws above you. If you touch them, you'll get caught by them and be unable to move for around 5 seconds.

The claws do not move around, so position yourself on the right hand side of the map away from them.

Clock Bombs

Clock Bombs

Papulatus will periodically summon blue clock bombs on the floor. Once summoned, you'll have five seconds to move out of the way.

Getting hit by one will deal around 60% HP damage.

Time Rifts

Time Rifts

At the start of the fight, Papulatus will summon Time Rifts. These appear on the bottom floor and will explode. If you touch them, it's 1-hit KO.

You can avoid them by standing on any of the middle platforms.

Papulatus Alarm

Papulatus Alarm

As the fight drags on, Papulatus will ring it's Alarm and clocksprings will fall from the ceiling (like Magnus). They deal small amount of damage if you get touched, but you'll also be constantly losing HP during this phase.

Papulatus Lasers

Laser

During the fight, Papulatus will summon two lasers on either side of the map. They will slowly rotate 360 degrees; if the two lasers touch, you'll be 1-hit KO'd.

Block

You can prevent the lasers from touching by standing in front of a laser to block it's path. Standing as close as possible to the laser is a good strategy- but sometimes it can be impossible to prevent the lasers from touching due to the floor being full of Clock bombs and Time Rifts.

Curse Of Papulatus

Papulatus Curse

The Curse Of Papulatus move happens once you get the HP down to around 80%. A timer will be placed above your head and one above Papulatus. When either timer reaches zero, you'll be stunned until the other timer reaches zero.

The aim of this mechanic is to make your timer match Papulatus' Timer as close as possible. You can do so by picking up 2x or 2 divide symbols that drop from mobs summoned. The 2x will double the time above your head and the 2 divide will half it.

You'll know you've been stunned when the padlock symbol appears above your head.

Dimensional Crack

Dimensional Crack

When you get Papulatu's health down to 20%, Papulatus will go into it's shell and the clock-face on the map will show several different percentages.

You'll have 45 seconds to remove as many of these percentages as possible; once the timer ends, the highest percentage that is left will be used to heal Papulatus. There are lots of 100% percentages, so Papulatus has the ability to fully heal during this phase.

In order to remove the percentages, you need to jump on the Portal next to the clock face and press up. Whatever hand the hour hand is pointing to, that percentage will be removed.

In order to move the hour hand, you'll need to kill the mobs that spawn and they will drop items that will move the clock hands. They can drop:

  • 9 hours
  • 2 hours
  • 50 minutes
  • 30 minutes
  • 10 minutes

Each time you consume one of the items, the clock hands move. You'll need to keep jumping onto the portal and pressing up to remove them.

As long as no 100% percentages remain, you can safely pass this phase without issue.

Papulatus Second Phase

Second Phase

The second phase begins once the first HP bar reaches zero. Papulatus Second phase is a lot easier than the first. It has less HP and you should generally be able to burst damage most of it.

During the second phase, most of the attacks and mechanics from the first phase are present (like the lasers, exploding bombs and rifts).

Papulatus Clone

clone

Papulatus will clone itself into around 5 other versions, which float around and shoot projectiles at you. They don't have a lot of health and the damage you take is negligible.

Reversal

You can also be hit with a reversal, which will teleport you across the map if you do not do enough damage.

Papulatus Boss Drops

Below you can see what drops you can obtain from Papulatus when you defeat it.
