Pirates were released in old-school MapleStory late in the Before Big Bang updates and the Buccaneer class were considered a great asset for bossing parties to help with damage and supporting other party members.
The original four explorer classes were joined by Pirates on November 2008, adding two new job branches (Buccaneer and Corsair) for MapleStory players to level up. They were the first new classes added to MapleStory since the game went live in 2004.
Pirates are a hybrid of range and melee classes, with unique abilities like Speed Infusion that made them viable for boss parties.
With the release of MapleStory Worlds, you can now play Pirate classes as they were before the Big Bang Update on servers like Artale.
If you're looking for the Modern version of this class, check out the Buccaneer Skill Build Guide.
Pirate, Brawler, Marauder, Buccaneer Highlights
Playing a Buccaneer provides some significant bossing abilities that will get you into most parties in old-school MapleStory. If you're planning on creating one, here is what you need to know.
If you want to create a Buccaneer, here are some of the benefits you'll get when playing this class:
- Dash Skill - A skill that allows you to dash around maps and gives passive speed increase.
- Speed Infusion - A party-wide buff skill that increases the attack speed of everyone in the party.
- Oak Barrel - Able to become invincible for a short period, similar to Dark Sight Mode.
- Low Potion Use - With a variety of skills to generate HP and MP, you'll save lots of mesos on potion costs.
Some of the disadvantages of playing a Pirate:
- Medium HP - They have better HP than Mages and Thiefs, but not better than Warrior classes.
- Sommersault Kick - You'll be using your first job skill until you reach 4th job!
Overview
Main Stat: STR
Secondary Stat: DEX
Weapon: Knuckle
Job Branch:
- Pirate (Level 10)
- Brawler (Level 30)
- Marauder (Level 70)
- Buccaneer (Level 120)
Assigning AP
A Pirates's main stat is STR that boosts damage. But you'll also need DEX for wearing equipment.
When rolling your stats for character creation, you want to aim for:
- STR: 13
- DEX: 4
- LUK: 4
- INT: 4
However, a Pirate needs 20 DEX in order to job advance, so you can safely roll anything that has 4 LUK and 4 INT and the rest in the other two stats.
You get 5 AP per level in MapleStory. A regular AP build for Pirate is:
- +4 STR every Level
- +1 DEX every Level
However, you need at least 20 DEX in order to job advance, so you'll want to put +2 DEX and +3 STR in the first 10 levels until you reach 20 DEX.
You'll want to cap your dex at around 70 and then gain DEX from Equipments in order to equip high-level equipment.

You get three attacking skills as a 1st job Pirate and you'll want to choose the skill depending on which job branch you're going to take (Buccaneer vs Corsair).
As a Buccaneer, you'll want to max Sommersault Kick early on as it will be your main attacking skill all the way up to 4th job!
Then max Dash for the extra speed and mobility. Bullet Time will increase your accuracy and Avoidability.
Put the rest of the points into Flash Fist for 1v1 monsters.
Brawler - Second Job Skill Build
At Level 30, you can do the second job advancement and become a Brawler or Gunslinger. Since we want to eventually become a Buccaneer, choose Brawler.
Follow this skill build:

- Level 67: Knuckle Booster +1, MP Recovery +2
- Level 68: MP Recovery +3
- Level 69: MP Recovery +3
- Level 70: MP Recovery +2, Oak Barrel +1
In second job, you get several more attacking skills that have a wide range of utility. But before you add any SP into them, you must first max Improve MAXHP for the additional HP you gain on level up.
After that, you can add some points into an attacking skill of your choice (Backspin Blow, Corkscrew Blow, Double Uppercut). We chose the Backspin Blow since it has a good dash, allowing you to get around flat maps easier.
Then you want to put 5 points into Knuckle Mastery, followed by 10 points into Knuckle Booster to increase your attack speed. Then max Knuckle Mastery.
Finally, you can then max all three attacking skills in any order you like.
You won't be able to max all skills at the moment (can in 3rd job), so you have the choice of leaving either MP Recovery or Oak Barrel unmaxed. MP Recovery will reduce your pot usage whereas Oak Barrel provides Dark Sight skill (useful for LPQ).
Marauder - Third Job Skill Build Guide
At Level 70, you can advance to the third job advancement and become a Marauder!
Follow this build:

As a Marauder you will want to max Energy Charge as soon as possible; this provides stance and a weapon attack boost. But more importantly, allows you to use Energy Blast more often.
Max Energy Blast next, followed by Stun Mastery and Energy Drain.
We leave Transformation until last because it's not very useful in 3rd job and we completely ignore Shockwave in favor of maxing skills from 2nd and 1st job.

You finally get a new main mobbing skill called Dragon Strike. You'll want to put an early point into Speed Infusion for attack speed boost and then max Dragon Strike.
Next up is getting Maple Warrior to Level 10, then adding 1 point into Super Transformation so you can use the Demolition skill. Barrage is your main 1v1 bossing skill, so you might want to add points into this earlier if you plan on running bosses.
Add a single point into Time Leap early on to reset your cooldowns and then add Energy Orb, Snatch and max the rest of your skills.
