The MapleStory class Hermit and Night Lord were one of the most popular classes to play in old-school MapleStory. Due to their high DPS output, they made for perfect bossing characters, have great mobility and were fun to train.
This skill build guide is based on MapleStory Before The Big Bang update, which is an old-school version of MapleStory with the classic MapleStory skills and jobs. With the release of MapleStory Worlds, old-school servers are becoming available again.

Assassin, Hermit and Night Lord Hightlights
In old-school MapleStory, Hermits dominated the scene for being the best bossing class in MapleStory. Using Throwing Stars to damage enemies, Hermits were able to quickly get around the MapleStory world with their unique flashjump ability and provide Haste to parties.
If you want to create a Hermit/Night Lord, here are some of the benefits you'll get when playing this class:
- High DPS - With the use of Shadow Partner, Hermits deal the best single-target damage in the entire game.
- Flashjump - Hermits were the only class in MapleStory that had a flashjump skill in the old version of the game, making it easy for them to travel across maps.
- Haste - They provide two useful support skills: Haste which increases the speed at which characters can move and Meso Up, which increases the amount of Mesos that drop from mobs
- Bossing - Since most MapleStory bosses are single-target mobs, Hermits exceed better than any other class at dealing damage.
- Dark Sight - Able to become invincible in Dark Sight Mode without taking any damage
Some of the disadvantages of playing a Hermit:
- Costly - Because of their popularity, the cost of buying Throwing Stars and Equips for a Thief tend to be a lot higher than other classes.
- Low HP - Like mages, Thieves have low HP, making them very squishy and easy to die.
- Recharge Stars - Throwing Stars have a limited supply, and you're required to recharge them at potion shops when they run out for a small amount of Mesos.
- Summoning Rocks - In order to use Shadow Partner, you need the ETC item Summoning Rocks which is consumed upon using the skill.
Overview
Main Stat: LUK
Secondary Stat: DEX
Weapon: Claw
Job Branch:
- Rogue (Level 10)
- Assassin (Level 30)
- Hermit (Level 70)
- Night Lord (Level 120)
Assigning AP
A Thief's main stat is LUK that boosts damage. But you'll also need DEX for wearing equipment and hitting mobs due to Thief's low accuracy.
When rolling your stats for character creation, you want to aim for:
- STR: 4
- DEX: 4
- LUK: 13
- INT: 4
However, a Thief needs 25 DEX in order to job advance, so you can safely roll anything that has 4 STR and 4 INT and the rest in the other two stats.
You get 5 AP per level in MapleStory. A regular AP build for Thief is:
- +4 LUK every Level
- +1 DEX every Level
However, you need at least 25 DEX in order to job advance, so you'll want to put +2 DEX and +3 LUK in the first 10 levels until you reach 25 DEX.
You'll want to cap your dex at around 70 and then gain DEX from Equipments in order to equip high-level equipment.
Thief - First Job Skill Build Guide
At Level 10, you can job advance to a Rogue by talking to the Dark Lord in Kerning City. You have the choice of either using a Claw or Dagger as a Thief, but since this guide is for a Night Lord, you'll want to use a Claw.
Each level up gives you 3 SP and your Job Advancement gives +1 SP.

After maxing Lucky Seven, then max Nimble Body for the extra Accuracy and Avoidability.
Finally, add 3 points into Disorder to unlock Dark Sight, and add the remaining points into it.
Assassin - Second Job Skill Build Guide
At Level 30, you can then job advance to one of two paths: Assassin or Bandit. This build is for an Assassin.

Assassin's follow a relatively simple path. First you want to put 5 points into Claw Mastery to unlock your Claw Booster skill, allowing you to attack faster and thus train quicker.
Then you'll want to max Critical Throw, which will boost your damage the most.
After that you have a choice between Haste and Claw Mastery; Haste is useful for Ludibrium Party Quest and partying; Claw Mastery will increase your damage and accuracy.
Finally, finish off maxing Claw Booster and then you can choose between either maxing Drain or Endure. Drain is useful for lowering potion costs since it returns you back to full HP, but it's a lot easier to just use a potion.
Hermit - Third Job Skill Build Guide
At Level 70, you can advance to the third job advancement and become a Hermit! This is where your damage will really start to show and your mobility outshines every single class.

As a Hermit, your focus should be on getting Shadow Partner maxed as soon as possible, as it gives the biggest damage boost of all your new skills.
After that, put 5 points into Avenger (your mobbing skill) and max Flash Jump for the better mobility. Then finish off Avenger.
Alchemist will save you on Potion costs as it increases their effectiveness and Meso Up provides a party wide drop rate buff to mesos.
You won't be using Shadow Web or Shadow Meso, so you can max out your earlier Second Job skills or First Job skills.
Night Lord - Fourth Job Skill Build Guide
At Level 120, you can make the fourth job advancement and become a Night Lord!
Fourth job is slightly different to other jobs in that you need to obtain Skill Books to increase the max level of a skill and also take on a few quests to unlock others. This guide assumes you have everything maxed out, but whilst waiting for skill books you can improve other skills.

Your main attacking skill, Triple Throw, is a Skill Book that drops from Zakum. So when you first do your fourth job advancement, you may not have access to the book (you cannot buy it either- you have to do Zakum runs). So adding 10 points into Maple Warrior early on will give you a damage boost.
Your main focus should be maxing Triple Throw and then Maple Warrior. Whilst you wait for these Skill Books to become available, the next two skills are useful to Night Lords:
Shadow Stars gives you unlimited throwing stars for a short duration and consuming a fixed amount. Shadow Shifter allows you to dodge more attacks, making you use even less potions than before.
Venomous Star is a passive that will deal a small amount of damage over time when you use throwing stars and Ninja Ambush and Ninja Storm are both useless.
