Pokemon GO players can now catch the mythical Pokemon Jirachi by completing the Special Research tasks for A Thousand-Year Slumber. Jirachi comes from Generation III of Pokemon, which included games such as Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.
The Pokemon is of type Steel/Psychic and this is the first time the Pokemon has been made available in Pokemon GO for regular players (outside of Pokemon GO Fest!)
Special Research tasks are available to all players and don't have an expiration date, meaning you can complete them whenever you like! A Special Research task can only be completed once per account.
Jirachi become available in August 2019 after players in Pokemon GO completed a Global Challenge.
Jirachi is a Mythical Pokemon that cannot be traded in Pokemon GO. It currently isn't possible to catch Shiny Jirachi (30/06/2021).
A Thousand-Year Slumber - Special Research
A Thousand-Year Slumber is the name of the Special Research set of tasks that you'll need to complete in order to catch Jirachi. It comprises of 7 sets of tasks, with a couple of time-gated missions thrown in (such as spinning Poke Stops 7 days in a row!).
Professor Willow is back and needs your help with researching Pokemon from the Hoenn Region. You'll find a lot of the tasks in this Special Research will require you to capture Hoenn-Region Pokemon, so it might take a while if the spawns of Pokemon GO are not favorable.
A Thousand-Year Slumber (1/7)
Tasks
- Catch 25 Pokemon (1,000 XP)
- Spin 10 PokeStops or Gyms (Jigglypuff)
- Make 3 new friends (Feebas)
Rewards: Mossy Lure Module, Glacial Lure Module, Magnetic Lure Module
A nice easy set of tasks to start you off. Pokemon GO recently expanded friends lists so you should have plenty of space to add 3 new friends- you can find various sites that allow you to exchange friend codes too!
A Thousand-Year Slumber (2/7)
Tasks
- Catch 3 Whismur (10 Whismur Candy)
- Evolve a Feebas (1,500 XP)
- Earn a gold Hoenn Medal (1,500 XP)
Rewards: x2000 Stardust, x10 Pokemon, x3 Incense
A tough set of tasks up next. Evolving a Feebas requires 100 Candy and walking it 20KM as your buddy. With Feebas can be quite tricky if spawns are not in your favor and so you'll have to try walking near water/river areas to see if it spawns more often.
Use Pinap Berries on Whismur if you're short on candy as you will need to evolve one in the next task.
A Gold Hoenn medal requires you to capture 90 Hoenn Pokemon, another time-consuming task.
A Thousand-Year Slumber (3/7)
Tasks
- Take a snapshot of Loudred (Snorlax)
- Make 3 Great Throws in a row (2,000 XP)
- Earn 3 Candies walking with your buddy (2,000 XP)
Rewards: x20 Silver Pinap Berry, 3x Star Piece, 2,000 Stardust
These tasks should be pretty straight forward. Getting hold of a Loudred should be your only stumbling block, but it evolves from Whismur so you can hopefully Pinap some Whismurs to help you.
A Thousand-Year Slumber (4/7)
Tasks
- Catch 50 Psychic or Steel Type Pokemon (2,500 XP)
- Power Up Pokemon 10 Times (2,500 XP)
- Send 10 Gifts to friends (2,500 XP)
Rewards: Charged TM, Premium Raid Pass, Fast TM
Again, you should find these tasks pretty straight-forward. Getting the 50 Psychic or Steel type Pokemon might prove bothersome if spawns are not suited to those types but apart from that you should be good to go!
A Thousand-Year Slumber (5/7)
Tasks
- Battle a team leader 3 times (Kricketune)
- Win against another trainer 7 times (3,000 XP)
- Win 5 Pokemon GO Raids (3,000 XP)
Rewards: 3x Rare Candy, 20x Ultra Ball, 3,000 Stardust
Team leaders can be battle through the Battle icon in your Pokemon GO menu. Scroll to the bottom of the tab and select either trainer; you don't even have to win!
Win against another trainer 7 times can be completed with a couple of friends or just use the Battle League's auto-match making and hope you come up against some easy opponents.
5 Raids can slow you down if you don't have any Premium or Remote Raid Passes. You can get 1 free Raid Pass a day from Gyms.
A Thousand-Year Slumber (6/7)
Tasks
- Take 5 snapshots of Psychic or Steel Pokemon (Chimecho)
- Make 3 Excellent Curveball throws (Bronzong)
- Spin a Pokestop 7 days in a row (4,000 XP)
Rewards: 10x Silver Pinap Berry, 10x Star Piece, 5,000 Stardust
The Excellent Curveball challenge is back and like all good Special Research Tasks, this one requires finding the right Pokemon to do it on. There are better Pokemon than others for getting Excellent Curveball throws, such as Snorlax, Electrabuzz and other big Pokemon.
The 7 Pokestop spins will slow you down, but you can enjoy knowing that right around the corner is Jirachi!
A Thousand-Year Slumber (7/7)
Tasks
- Claim (4,500 XP)
- Claim (4,500 XP)
- Claim (4,500 XP)
Rewards: Jirachi, 20x Jirachi Candy, Jirachi T-Shirt (in-game item)
Congratulations on completing A Thousand-Year Slumber special research and enjoy your new Mythical Pokemon Jirachi!
