You can now catch Shiny Celebi in Pokemon GO for a limit time during the Secrets Of The Jungle Event. This event coincides with the release of the new Pokemon Movie: Secrets Of The Jungle and rewards players with a guaranteed capture of the Legendary Pokemon Celebi in Shiny form!
Secrets Of The Jungle Special Research
In order to capture this Pokemon, you need to complete the Special Research titled Distracted by Something Shiny; this is a limited time event, meaning at some point the Special Research will be removed. So far, the Special Research will begin on December 14th 2020 around the world.
This Special Research requires you to help Jesse and James from Team Rocket. There are only four different sets of tasks to complete, with the last one being a freebie.
The fact that this Special Research is so short, would suggest that it's not going to hang around for much longer! You can learn more about the event on the official Pokemon GO website.
Distracted by Something Shiny (1/4)
- Transfer 10 Pokemon (x20 Ultra Ball)
- Catch 10 Grass-type Pokemon (Nuzleaf)
- Evolve 3 Grass-Type Pokemon (Cottonee)
Rewards: Wild Encounter (Diglett), 500 Stardust, 1000 XP
Tips: Grass Pokemon spawns will mostly include Cottonee and Nuzleaf. Cottonee only needs 50 Candy to evolve and a Sun Stone, whilst Nuzleaf needs 100 Candy to Evolve. If you took part in the December Community Day, you might have been able to stock up on Seedot to Evolve.
Distracted By Something Shiny (2/4)
- Play with your buddy 10 times: (Poffin)
- Take a snapshot of a Grass-type Pokemon (Combee)
- Give your buddy 10 treats (Cherubi)
Rewards: Wild Encounter (Pinsir), 500 Stardust, 1000 XP
Tips: These tasks are relatively easy. You can take a snapshop of the Cherbui you get for feeding your Pokemon Buddy 10 times, and playing with yoru Buddy 10 times just requires you to tickle your Pokemon in the Play AR mode.
Distracted By Something Shiny (3/4)
- Defeat Jessie or James 4 times (5x Revives)
- Make 5 Great Curveball throws (Hoothoot)
- Hatch 3 Eggs (Whimsicott)
Rewards: Wild Encounter (Vibrava), 500 Stardust, 1000 XP
Tips: The Team Rocket Balloon has been replaced with the Meowth Balloon. Clicking on it will initiate the Jesse or James battle; it seems to be appearing every 6 hours or so. Will update this post once we've confirmed.
For Egg Hatching, you can use boosted Egg Incubators, or just make sure you're Egg hatching those 2KM eggs.

- Claim Reward (500 XP)

Congratulations! If you missed out on this event, you can always get Celebi from the Special Research A Ripple In Time.
Explorer Pikachu
During the Secrets Of The Jungle event, you can also catch a special edition Pikachu: Explorer Pikachu. It also comes in Shiny version too- so good luck hunting it. You have until December 21st 2020 to capture Explorer Pikachu.
New Pokemon Spawns
The following Pokemon will be appearing more often during the event period December 14th - December 17th (Thursday):
- Wild Encounters: Hoothoot, Nuzleaf, Drilbur, Cottonee, Dwebble. Lucky people may also find a Durant.
- Raids: Lickitung, Mawile, Flygon, Rufflet.
- 5KM Eggs: Igglybuff, Smoochum, Elekid, Magby, Bonsly, and Rufflet.
